Arduino is a great starting point for electronics, and with a motor shield it can also be a nice tidy platform for robotics and mechatronics. The L293D motor drive expansion board is a monolithic integrated, high voltage, high current, 4-channel driver, that you can use to drive DC motors and and inductive loads with up to 36 volts. The L293D chip allows high frequency control of direction and duty cycle of power.
